Postal code structure in Germany
This German postal code system is developed by the German national postal service (Deutsche Post) to divide Germany into different areas. With this system each German region gets a unique code and locations can be found easily.
Postal codes in Germany are known as Postleitzahlen. The 5-digit postal code system of Germany was introduced in 1993. Four years after the reunification of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic. Before that time, Germany had a 4-digit postal code system.
The 5-digit postal code has the following structure:
- 1xxxx: The first digit represents a specific German area or region. 1 represents the regions Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and parts of Saxony
- 10xxx: The second digit represent a region. 10 features the region Berlin.
- 10115: The last three digits feature a certain town, commune and group of delivery district. 115 features Berlin-Mitte.
