This map depicts the all crime index per 10,000 inhabitants and this data is segmented on a census tract level. This crime statistics map is part of a bigger dataset with different types of crimes, like burglary, murder etc.
This map depicts the Total Crime Index. This index is a generic term, that involves all features: personal crime, murder, rape, robbery, assault, property crime, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.
All data about these crime is collected in the Uniform Crime Reports commissioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). These crime statistics (index) are segmented on a census tract level. Census tracts are the areas that are defined by the US Census Bureau for the collection of census data. These crime stats are displayed based on an index. That means that the figures in this dataset show whether crime rates in a certain area are average, below average or above average. For example, index = 100 means that the crime rate in this area is normal. Index = 140 means that this area has an above average crime rate and index = 85 means that this area has a below average crime rate.
