This dataset depicts the boundaries of all 5-digit postal code areas in Spain. This Spanish postal code system is developed by the Spanish national postal service (Correos) to divide Spain in different areas. With this system each Spanish region gets a unique code and locations can be found easily.

Postal codes in Spain are known as código postal. These postal codes were introduced in 1976, when the Spanish postal service implemented automatic sortation in their business. Bigger cities, like Barcelona and Madrid are divided in different districts, which look a lot like the structure in Paris.

Postal code structure of Spain

This map depicts the boundaries of 5-digit postal code or districts within the country of Spain. These 5-digit postal codes are the highest level in the current postal code system of Spain. The official 5-digit postal code contains the following characters and features:

  • The first two digits represent a province
  • The third digit represents a large Spanish town or main delivery rounds
  • The last two digits feature the delivery area, secondary delivery route or link with rural areas

The current postal code (codigo postal) range of Spain (ES) is: 01001 – 52006. The lowest 5-digit postal code (01001) starts in Vitoria Gasteiz. This is a municipality and capital city of the Basque Autonomous Community. The highest postal code (52006) is located in Melilla. This is a Spanish autonomous city on the north coast of the African continent that is bordering with Morocco.
