More details about this data

What is the difference between retail purchasing power and disposable income?

The main difference lies in the number of deductions calculated. Disposable income (or: net income) is the income after taxes, pension plans, alimonies and other costs an employer deducts from a salary. On the other hand, retail purchasing power additionally deducts expenditures for rent, mortgages, insurance, automobiles, traveling and services. Therefore, this gives great insights into the (real) purchasing power of your customers.

Compare local purchasing power with an index

To enhance comparison between different zip codes Spotzi also included per capita income indices. Spotzi calculates the national average retail purchasing power of all people. This average is set to 100. Postal codes with more affluent people will have a higher purchasing power than the national average so the index will be higher than 100. For instance, an index of 200 means the average spending power in this postal code area is twice as high as the national average.
